Bio/Statement
Nature has been a large part of my life. I have enjoyed countless camping, backpacking, fishing, and hunting trips in some of the most beautiful places on earth. I’ve carried a camera with me since high school, taking pictures as a way of recording the beautiful places I’ve been. But somewhere along the way, I quit using my camera to “record”, and I started using it to “see”.
Through my camera lens, I’ve learned to observe the interconnectedness of the ever-changing natural world. I see how the change of seasons, or the change of weather, or a change in light can alter the look, feel, and emotional response to a scene. It is thoughtful observation of details in nature that brings me solace and comfort.
I strive to create fine art nature photography. I create images to share the experience of a place, or a feeling or a mood. Or to express a thought or condition.
The creation of an image is a process for me. It usually starts with an image I visualize, or a feeling I want to express. While “in the field” I tend to move slowly; I pay attention to the lighting, the clouds, the colors around me; and how I feel about what I’m seeing. While composing an image I get completely immersed in what I’m doing. I get lost “in the zone”. When I’m back in the comfort of my home office/studio, I process the images with the same slow, contemplative approach. I am in love with the whole image-creating process - from visualization to final completion.
